Canadians are always looking for ways to reduce their taxes. But watch out -- if a tax reduction strategy looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Canadians are among the world's most heavily taxed people. So, it's not surprising we are always on the lookout for creative ways to reduce our taxes, whether it's seeking out new deductions, shelters or estate-planning strategies.


"Canada uses a self-assessment method of calculating income-tax liability," says Colette Gentes-Hawn, a spokeswoman for the
Canada Revenue Agency. "So you have the right to reduce your taxes as much as possible, within the law."

 

The problem with aggressive tax planning is that much of it goes overboard. That can mean either crossing the line into illegality or getting involved with complex schemes that, although they are legal and may reduce your taxes, can also leave you open to substantial harm down the line.

Canadian dollar jumps as Canada adds roughly 21,000 jobs last month PDF Print E-mail

OTTAWA - Prospects for a sustained economic recovery brightened considerably Friday on news Canada created 60,000 full-time jobs last month and fresh evidence the U.S. domestic economy is advancing.

 

Roughly 21,000 net new jobs were added in Canada last month, pushing the national unemployment rate down to 8.2 per cent from 8.3 per cent.

 

But the better news was that 60,200 more workers found full-time employment, offset by a loss of 39,000 part-time jobs.
