The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is to take effect on July 1, 2010 in Ontario.  HST is the combined tax of the former GST (federal sales tax 5%) and PST (provincial sales tax 8%).  Please refer to government documentation for to what is taxable and what is not.

OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has tabled new legislation meant to prevent crooked immigration consultants from cheating vulnerable newcomers of their savings or encouraging them to lie to stay in Canada.

The measures would make it a crime for unauthorized consultants to provide immigration advice for a fee. They could face up to two years in jail or a $50,000 fine for even trying to engage in immigration fraud.

It took time for Sneha Grace Koshy and her family to adapt to Canadian life after immigrating to Mississauga from Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 2008.

The 18-year-old St. Marcellinus Secondary School student wrote in an RBC Royal Bank Scholarship for New Canadians application essay that although it was an exciting, new experience, it took a while for her parents to find jobs and for her and her brother to settle into their new schools and community.

A prominent environmental group says perfume makers stink when it comes to divulging the potentially dangerous chemicals in their products.

Environmental Defence, along with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, commissioned a study of perfumes sold in Canada. The group says the study shows that perfumes often contain a dozen of what it calls "secret chemicals" not listed on labels -- chemicals that can trigger allergic reactions or disrupt hormones.
